Serving As The Hands and Feet of Christ

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me -- watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

History

Central Baptist Church is celebrating its 120th foundation anniversary this year (2016), with the theme: "Honor the Past. Celebrate the Present. Envision the Future," based on 2 Timothy 1:3. It was established on October 19, 1896 by members who were formerly affiliated with the First Baptist Church of North Broad Street in Woodbury. The church evolved out of the South Side Baptist School started on June 30 1889 by a group of mothers who wanted a Sunday School on the South side of the Woodbury Creek Bridge for their children to attend in safety. Continuing from early in its history, Central Baptist Church in Woodbury has been “A Church that Cares”, with a strong commitment to learning about Jesus Christ and serving others in His name through its local and world-wide missions projects which are central to the life of the church community.

Activities

Worship:

Our Sunday Worship Service takes place under the leadership of Dr. Carla A Romarate-Knipel, Pastor and is facilitated by the CBC Choir, and the Praise Team. Communion is administered on the first Sunday of each month, and is also available for the sick and shut-in (Contact Pat Moore, Chair of the Worship Committee: Email pmoore6720@aol.com). Worship is not just about spending an hour on Sunday morning. It is about living our lives as a daily offering of worship to God, tapping into the source of His power to live the Christian life.

Education:

Dedicated teachers lead Sunday School Classes for adults and children at 9:15 A.M. and a children’s message, entitled “Small Talk”, is given during the worship service, after which the children leave for further educational experiences in an adult-led “Kids Club” (Contact Roxanne Long, Sunday School Superintendent: Email nanirox9@gmail.com).

CBC provides additional opportunities for Christian education through Bible Study undertaken currently in the following groups: (1) Women’s Bible Study at 7:30 P.M. every Wednesday; (2) Women’s Small Group Bible Study at 7:00 P.M., the second and fourth Mondays each month (Contact Roxanne Long, Email nanirox9@gmail.com). and (3) Wednesday Evening Bible Study at 7:00 P.M. (Contact Diane Bradley, Email dbradley116487@verizon.net).

Ministries:

The Camden Mission Outreach provides lunches each Saturday for homeless individuals in Camden. A team of enthusiastic volunteers (a team of volunteers for each of the weeks in the month) prepares 200+ sandwiches and makes up 100 lunch bags including bottles of water, cookies and fruit. During the cold months, hot soup or hot coffee is provided as well (Contact Diane Bradley, Emaildbradley116487@verizon.net).

Our Sunday School Ministry is collecting coins to purchase animals from the HEIFER PROJECT to assist our International Ministries. We have saved enough to purchase a Sheep, Water Buffalo, Flocks of Chicks, Hives of Bees, Rabbits and now we are collecting for Goats.

Greater Woodbury Cooperative Ministries, including food and clothes collection throughout the year, school supplies and backpacks, a Thanksgiving Collection and Christmas gifts for seniors and children, distributed through the Woodburn Food Co-op.

American Baptist Women’s (ABW) Ministries consists of an annual retreat and several mission projects including the Love Gift Collection, White Cross Collection of items for the Christian Center in Ohio, White Cross cash donation to support the International Ministries, and the following special offerings: America for Christ; One Great Hour of Sharing; World Mission Offering; and Retired Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Offering. ABW meets the 4th Monday of the Month (Contact Joan Moyer, Chair, ABW, Email moyerjb@msn.com)..
